A Message from Artistic Director, Joe Slabe

Posted October 20, 2009

Artistic Director Joe SlabeI'm thrilled to be able to offer Calgary audiences our first full season of productions from the Forte Musical Theatre Guild! First up, and back by popular demand, but this IS my day job… is a musical revue that explores the highs and lows of making a life — if not always a living — in the arts. Theatre-goers who were unable to get a ticket to the sold-out houses during last season’s presentation will get another chance to see this very funny (and sometimes poignant) look at the trials and tribulations of being an artist. And, as a special treat, we've added two new songs to celebrate the festive season!

Secondly, after sell-out runs and critical raves in Philadelphia, New York, and London, Austentatious comes to Calgary for its Canadian premiere! Join us as the Cochrane Ranche Amateur Players get ready for their own adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Will Mr. Darcy make the right choice? Will Sam be able to hold it all together? And will the entire cast be safe from the marauding bear? We've assembled a truly all-star, all Calgarian cast that's going to amaze you, which includes such well-known local actors as Tory Doctor, Onalea Gilbertson, Elinor Holt, David LeReaney and Ksenia Thurgood. You've seen them at Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects, One Yellow Rabbit and Stage West and now you can see them at Forte!

In terms of what our season will have to offer audiences, both shows are set in the world of the theatre, but touch on the universal experience of trying to make your way in the world. I’m especially excited that we’re bringing Austentatious to Calgary for its fourth professional production and its Canadian premiere. It’s unusual for a Calgary writer to have a show done in London, NY and Philly before playing here at home, but, given the re-writes and edits along the way, Calgary audiences will enjoy the fastest paced and funniest version yet!

See you at the theatre!
